Attracting chic drifters since the Sixties, Lamu has much in common with Zanzibar. Castaways should head for Manda Island, a short boat ride across the straits; it's a world dark mangroves, bright stars, the billowing triangular sails of dhows, and warm, pale waters lapping indolent deserted sands, which yield nothing but coconut-palms, shells and crab skeletons. Just opened, the Majlis has 25 rooms and suites reflecting the local style of interiors, each with lovely views of the Ras Kitau Bay. The hotel is only accessed by boat. Sunday Times, November 8, 2009An Italian family has transformed its own house into the 25-room Majlis boutique hotel on Manda Island. An exotic mix of ancient Swahili and Omani architecture, it is set right on the channel overlooking Lamu’s famously long, creamy-sand beach, but its USPs are its pool and ayurvedic spa. Prices are not as high as many on Lamu: from about £435 per room per night, full-board.
